Last weekend my husband and I decided to take an impromptu staycation to Carlsbad! It was a long week for the both of us so we were super excited to get away. We packed up the kids and hit the road around 9pm which is so late for me these days!
We arrived in Carlsbad just before 11pm and we stayed at the beautiful Cape Rey Resort and Spa. I have been to San Diego tons of times but I had never stayed in Carlsbad before so it was fun exploring a new place. Plus, it’s the city where we got engaged last year so it made it that much more special.
The resort is located in a cute little beach town that’s just steps away from the ocean. We were so close that we could hear the sound of the waves crashing against the shore as we were unloading our bags. The air is so cool and refreshing too.
Our first morning we made our way downstairs and had breakfast on the patio at their in house restaurant, Chandlers. I had the traditional American breakfast with fluffy eggs and sausage and my husband ordered the breakfast burrito. Our two kiddos shared the pancakes which was a huge serving. Everything tasted delicious.

After breakfast we head back upstairs to change and get ready to go to the pool. The hotel was really on top of things as far as ensuring that the guests had enough space to practice social distancing and they reduced the capacity at the pool to help keep people apart. The grounds were so clean and we felt very safe all throughout our visit.
We hung out poolside for most of the day on Saturday. It was incredibly relaxing and the weather was amazing. I sprawled out on the patio daybed with the baby and the warm sun felt so good on our bodies and faces.

When the sun started to go down, we went back to the room to clean up and get ready for dinner. We stopped off at Chandlers again but this time to grab a quick drink and some appetizers. I had the Red Wine Sangria and it was just what I like, sweet and fruity! We also ordered the tomato basil flatbread and lobster shrimp nachos to share and oh my gosh it tasted so good, I was already full and we were still supposed to go get dinner! It worked out though because the ocean view while we dined was breathtaking. We ended up hanging out for a while just to enjoy it.
For dinner we ate at Bluewater Grill. They set up a bunch of tables and chairs to dine outside since here in CA we still are not allowed to eat inside the restaurant. They did a really great job with the setup, it still felt very welcoming and comfortable and our server was so sweet and kind. I ordered the fish and chips but the servings were huge and I just ate so I could hardly finish it!

The next morning we went in to the city to explore. There were so many cute little sidewalk shops to check out! Around mid day the baby started to get fussy so we decided to head back a little early. On the way home we made a pit stop in Aliso Viejo and checked out Grand Park. The views at this park were amazing! It felt like you could see the entire city. We will definitely be back there to picnic!

Even though we had to cut our time short, the time away was very much needed and helped us come back home feeling recharged and ready to take on the world again. We absolutely loved Carlsbad and hope to be back soon!
